While a majority of farmers continue to grow seasonal vegetables under the traditional, open-farm method, trellis system has been found to significantly improve the quantity and quality of creeper vegetables and, thus, makes it a very profitable endeavour. In addition to the creeper vegetables growing on trellis, farmers have used the land underneath the hanging trellis to grow spices such as Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic and Onion.
Sadguru has helped set up almost five thousand trellis systems covering about two thousand acres benefitting over 29,000 people. The plot size is usually ¼ acre and in some cases, they are up to one acre. As per the information collected from the field, ¼ acre gives yields typically worth Rs. 40,000, but in some cases as high as Rs.75,000. Considering these returns, this activity has cumulatively created impact in the range of more than Rs. 32 crores per year. This is revolutionary income from small patch of land by marginal farmers. This program has been supported by the Department of Horticulture, Department of Tribal Development, Gujarat, NABARD in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
